The Hyvä theme replaces Magento’s default Luma frontend with a much leaner stack. Luma ships RequireJS, Knockout.js and jQuery to the browser on almost every page. Hyvä drops that stack and builds the storefront with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js, so pages carry far less JavaScript and CSS. For most stores that means faster rendering and a frontend developers can change without fighting the framework. It also means a smaller codebase to maintain over time.
Since 10 November 2025 the Hyvä Theme is open source under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 licenses, the same licenses Magento Open Source uses. The theme itself costs nothing. Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä Commerce remain paid, proprietary products, and we tell you upfront which of them your project actually needs. Many stores start with the free theme and add Hyvä Checkout later.
Hyvä is a rebuild of your storefront templates. Your catalog, orders and admin stay where they are, but every Luma template and every frontend-facing extension needs a Hyvä version. Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä Commerce are still paid products. Our cost is the development work: rebuilding your templates, adapting extensions and testing, priced as a fixed proposal after a free audit.
Not always. Hyvä can run with Magento’s default Luma checkout through a fallback, which some stores keep at first. Hyvä Checkout is a paid product that gives a faster, easier-to-customize checkout built on the same approach as the theme. We look at your payment and shipping methods and checkout customizations, then recommend whether the license is worth it for you.
Extensions that only run in the admin or backend usually work unchanged. Extensions that add frontend features need Hyvä-compatible templates. Many vendors ship their own, and there are community compatibility modules for others. For anything left, our Hyvä developers write the compatibility layer. You see the full list in the audit, before any work begins, including any modules we suggest removing.
We do not promise a fixed score, because results depend on your hosting, images, third-party scripts and extensions. Hyvä removes most of Luma’s JavaScript and CSS weight, which typically helps Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint. We measure your current field data first and report the before and after numbers honestly, using real-user field data where your store has enough traffic.
It depends on the number of custom templates, frontend extensions and checkout changes. A store close to default Luma moves much faster than one with years of custom features.
