Mage-OS is the community distribution of Magento Open Source. This guide covers what it is, what it needs, where to download it, and how to install it or move an existing Magento store to it.
Updated October 2026Reading time 15 minCurrent release Mage-OS 3.5.0
Mage-OS is an independent, non-profit distribution of Magento Open Source maintained by the community. Mage-OS 3 is built on Magento Open Source 2.4.9, so themes and extensions that work on 2.4.9 generally work on Mage-OS 3.
No access keys: the Composer repository is public. You do not need an Adobe account to install it.
Fast security releases: Mage-OS 3.5.0 (8 September 2026) was an emergency release that brought Adobe's fix for a critical remote code execution flaw within days.
Same code base: modules, the admin and the database structure are those of Magento 2.4.9.
We run Mage-OS 3.5 with a Hyvä storefront on our own test server, with a real Turkish catalogue and installment payments. The notes in this guide come from that installation.
Requirements
Component
Mage-OS 3
PHP
8.3 to 8.5
Composer
2.10.2 or newer
Database
MySQL 8.4+ or MariaDB 12.3+
Search
OpenSearch 3+ (Elasticsearch 8.x also listed)
Web server
nginx 1.28+ or Apache 2.4+
Cache and sessions
Valkey (Redis-compatible)
The server preparation is the same as for Magento 2.4.9. Follow the Magento 2.4.9 on Ubuntu guide for the server, Ubuntu, tuned-adm and services, then come back here for the download.
Choosing a server
Size the server for search, indexing and checkout, not for the homepage. A catalogue of 50,000 products needs memory for OpenSearch and the database long before the storefront feels slow.
Starter4 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · NVMe
Up to about 5,000 products and a few hundred orders a month. Everything on one server.
Growth8 vCPU · 16–32 GB RAM · NVMe
Larger catalogues, several store views, Varnish in front. Still one server.
Scale16+ vCPU · 64 GB RAM
Database and OpenSearch on their own servers, heavy traffic or many integrations.
VPS or dedicated: a good VPS is enough for most stores. Choose dedicated hardware when you need guaranteed CPU at peak times.
Location: pick a data centre close to your customers. Frankfurt or Amsterdam for Germany and most of Europe, Istanbul for Türkiye, London for the UK.
Disk: NVMe only. Magento reads and writes many small files and the database is disk-heavy during indexing.
Backups: snapshots from the provider are not a backup plan on their own. Keep daily database dumps and media copies in a second location.
Downloading Mage-OS
RecommendedComposer
One command, no access keys:
cd /var/www
composer create-project \
--repository-url=https://repo.mage-os.org/ \
mage-os/project-community-edition mageos
For developmentGitHub
The Mage-OS fork of the Magento core lives at github.com/mage-os/mageos-magento2. Use it to read the code or contribute; install live stores with Composer.
Quick tryDocker
Mage-OS's own documentation describes a Docker setup for local development, which is the quickest way to look around. Mage-OS does not publish a separate ZIP package for live stores.
Then follow the same after-installation steps as for Magento: Varnish, session locking, two-factor login, mail and backups.
Moving from Magento to Mage-OS
Because Mage-OS 3 is built on Magento 2.4.9, moving a 2.4.9 store is a change of Composer packages, not a rebuild. Stores on older versions upgrade to the matching level first.
Make a full backup of code, database and media, and work on a staging copy.
Check every extension against Magento 2.4.9 / Mage-OS 3.
Switch the Composer repository and the meta-package to Mage-OS, then run composer update.
Run bin/magento setup:upgrade, compile and deploy static content.
Test checkout, payments, e-mails and integrations before switching the live store.
Moving a live store? We plan and run the switch on a staging copy first, so the live store keeps selling.
tuned is a Linux service that applies a set of kernel and system settings for a type of workload: CPU frequency behaviour, disk scheduling, memory and network parameters. You pick one profile, tuned applies it and keeps it after a reboot.
apt install -y tuned
systemctl enable --now tuned
tuned-adm recommend # what tuned suggests for this machine
tuned-adm profile virtual-guest
tuned-adm active
tuned-adm verify
Profile
Use it when
virtual-guest
The server is a VPS or cloud instance. This is the usual case and what we run.
throughput-performance
Dedicated hardware where the total amount of work matters most.
latency-performance
Dedicated hardware where every millisecond of response time counts.
Measure before and after with the same requests: a category page, a search and an add to cart, with the full page cache bypassed. Keep the profile that is faster on your hardware. tuned helps at the margins; a slow extension or a missing index costs far more.
