In short
Magento Open Source, Mage-OS and Adobe Commerce now share the same 2.4.9 codebase at their core, but they differ in governance, release speed, features and cost. Mage-OS 3.x is a free, community-run distribution that adds features and follows Adobe’s security fixes within days. Adobe Commerce adds licensed B2B and enterprise features, with a choice between self-managed PaaS and the fully managed, versionless Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service.
Choosing a Magento platform used to be a two-way decision: free Open Source or paid Adobe Commerce. In 2026 there are realistically four paths: Magento Open Source, the Mage-OS distribution, Adobe Commerce on PaaS (on-premises or on Cloud infrastructure), and Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, Adobe’s SaaS offering.
This guide compares them on the points that matter to e-commerce managers and CTOs: code base, licensing, release speed, support, hosting responsibility and fit.
Magento Open Source
Magento Open Source is Adobe’s free edition, licensed under OSL 3.0. It follows the same lifecycle and release schedule as Adobe Commerce: one feature release per year in May, full security patch releases at least once a year, and monthly isolated security patches on Patch Tuesday. The current release, 2.4.9, became generally available on May 12, 2026, with standard support until May 31, 2029.
2.4.9 is a significant modernization. According to Adobe’s release notes it adds PHP 8.5 support and drops PHP 8.2, replaces Laminas MVC with a native implementation, swaps TinyMCE for HugeRTE, replaces Zend_Cache with Symfony Cache, and moves dependencies to Symfony 7.4 LTS.
Open Source suits stores that want the reference Magento code base with no license fee and are comfortable running their own hosting, patching and support.
Mage-OS
What it is
Mage-OS is a community-owned distribution of Magento maintained by the Mage-OS Association, a nonprofit based in Poznań, Poland. It is free, self-hosted and licensed under OSL 3.0. Mage-OS describes itself as compatible with existing Magento extensions.
Current versions
Mage-OS 3.0 was released on May 18, 2026, built on Magento Open Source 2.4.9, six days after Adobe’s 2.4.9 general availability. The 3.x line has moved quickly since then:
| Version | Date | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0.0 | May 18, 2026 | Feature release | Based on Magento Open Source 2.4.9 |
| 3.3.0 | August 5, 2026 | Security release | Fix in bundled PageBuilder template import, PHP 8.5 and Redis fixes |
| 3.4.0 | August 11, 2026 | Security release | Includes Adobe’s August security patch (APSB26-92) |
| 3.5.0 | September 8, 2026 | Emergency security release | Ports Adobe’s hotfix for CVE-2026-75650 (APSB26-146) |
Mage-OS 3.5.0 deserves attention. It ports Adobe’s VULN-39341 hotfix for CVE-2026-75650, a CVSS 10.0 unauthenticated remote code execution flaw affecting 2.4.4 through 2.4.9 that was exploited in the wild. Adobe published its security update on September 7, 2026, and Mage-OS shipped 3.5.0 the next day. Mage-OS’s release notes stress that patching is not enough: stores should scan for backdoors and rotate the encryption key and every credential it protected.
composer require mage-os/product-community-edition 3.5.0 --no-update
composer updateWhat Mage-OS adds
Mage-OS 3.0 introduced an interactive installer with service auto-detection, built-in returns management (RMA), an admin activity log, an opt-in minimal distribution of roughly 98 packages, PHP 8.4 lazy object loading, and bundled developer tools such as n98-magerun2, Ignition error pages and an optimized Varnish configuration. Mage-OS 3 requires PHP 8.3 at minimum and supports PHP 8.5.
Release speed and support policy
Mage-OS adopted a versioning strategy in July 2025: major releases roughly twice a year (planned for April and October), minor releases following Adobe’s security patches, and patch releases for critical off-schedule fixes. Its roadmap is explicit that only the latest Mage-OS release is supported. That is a key difference from Adobe’s three-year support windows. Choosing Mage-OS means committing to stay current.
Moving from Magento Open Source
Mage-OS documents a migration path from Magento Open Source that replaces the base package with mage-os/product-community-edition via Composer and runs the standard upgrade commands. As with any platform change, test your extensions and integrations on staging first.
Adobe Commerce: PaaS and SaaS
Adobe Commerce on PaaS (on-premises or Cloud infrastructure)
This is the traditional licensed product. It shares the 2.4.x code base and lifecycle with Open Source, adding licensed features such as B2B, plus Adobe support. Versions 2.4.6 and 2.4.7 also receive one year of extended support at no extra cost, a benefit Adobe describes for Adobe Commerce customers.
On Adobe Commerce on Cloud infrastructure, Adobe enforces security deadlines. Its enforcement policy requires dependency upgrades from October 30, 2026 and version upgrades by June 1, 2027 for 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, and by June 1, 2028 for 2.4.6 and 2.4.7. Adobe states that environments that miss deadlines may have traffic suspended.
Adobe does not publish list prices for Adobe Commerce. Licensing is quote-based and commonly tied to gross merchandise value, so get a quote before relying on any figures you see online.
Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service (SaaS)
Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, introduced in summer 2025, is a fully managed, versionless SaaS platform. Adobe describes it as providing upgrades without manual intervention. Storefronts are built on Edge Delivery Services, and customization happens through App Builder, API Mesh and integration starter kits rather than by modifying core code.
Adobe’s own guidance points out that migrating from PaaS to SaaS is mainly about re-aligning APIs, responsibilities and system boundaries; copying data is the easy part. Stores with heavy in-process customizations should expect a significant rearchitecture. Adobe’s perspective article positions it best for organizations already invested in the Adobe Experience Cloud with limited custom Commerce functionality.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mage-OS compatible with Magento extensions?
Mage-OS states it is compatible with existing Magento extensions, since it is built on Magento Open Source. Always test on staging, especially extensions that touch areas Mage-OS has extended.
How fast does Mage-OS ship security fixes?
Mage-OS releases minor versions following Adobe’s security patches, typically within days. For the September 2026 CVE-2026-75650 hotfix, Mage-OS 3.5.0 shipped the day after Adobe’s update.
Can I switch from Open Source to Mage-OS and back?
Mage-OS documents a Composer-based migration from Magento Open Source. Because both share the same base, moving is generally a package swap plus testing, but any Mage-OS-only features you adopt would need replacing if you move back.
Does Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service replace Adobe Commerce on Cloud?
Both are offered today. Adobe’s enforcement policy lists migration to Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service as one way to meet its Cloud deadlines, alongside upgrading to a supported version.
