In short
Good Magento SEO is mostly about control: stop layered navigation from creating thousands of crawlable duplicates, set canonicals and redirects correctly, keep sitemaps clean, add hreflang and product structured data, and fix Core Web Vitals. Then invest in category and product content that answers real buyer questions.
Magento SEO is powerful and unforgiving. Magento gives you more control over URLs, metadata and crawling than most platforms, and that same control lets one wrong setting create thousands of duplicate pages. This checklist covers the technical work that matters most in 2026, based on Google’s own documentation and Adobe’s configuration reference.
Work through it in order. Indexing and crawl control come first because content and links cannot help pages that Google never sees or sees in fifty versions.
1. Start your Magento SEO work with an indexing audit
Start in Google Search Console. Check the Pages report for indexed vs not indexed counts, and compare the indexed total with the number of products, categories and CMS pages you expect. A large gap in either direction is your first clue.
- Far more indexed URLs than real pages usually means faceted URLs, session parameters or sort orders are being indexed.
- Far fewer usually means canonical, noindex or robots problems, or thin pages Google chose to skip.
Crawl the site with a desktop crawler as well, and check your staging environment is not indexable.
2. Control layered navigation and faceted URLs
Layered navigation is the biggest Magento 2 SEO risk. Every filter combination (color, size, price, brand) plus sort and pagination parameters creates a new URL. On a large catalog that is millions of crawlable URLs.
Google’s faceted navigation guidance is direct: often there is no good reason to allow crawling of filtered items. Its recommendations:
- Block crawling of filter parameters you do not want indexed with robots.txt disallow rules. Google calls this the preferred approach for most sites.
- If you do want some filtered pages indexed (for example “red running shoes” with real search demand), make them deliberate landing pages with unique titles, copy and clean URLs.
- Use the standard
&separator and keep filter order consistent so the same combination always produces the same URL. - Return a 404 for filter combinations with no products.
Treat rel=”nofollow” and canonical tags on filter links as weaker supporting signals. Google notes they may reduce crawling only gradually.
3. Set canonicals and URL settings
In Magento, go to Stores > Settings > Configuration > Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization. Review these fields:
| Setting | Typical recommendation |
|---|---|
| Use Canonical Link Meta Tag for Categories | Yes |
| Use Canonical Link Meta Tag for Products | Yes |
| Use Categories Path for Product URLs | Often No, so each product has one short URL |
| Create Permanent Redirect for URLs if URL Key Changed | Yes |
| Product / Category URL Suffix | Pick one and never change it casually |
Google treats rel=”canonical” as a strong signal, not a directive. Follow its rules: include a self-referencing canonical, use absolute URLs, link internally to the canonical version, and never send conflicting canonical signals through different methods. Do not use robots.txt or noindex to manage canonicalization.
Check that category pagination pages are not all canonicalized to page one. Products deeper in the list need a crawl path.
4. Review robots.txt and meta robots
Magento manages robots instructions under Content > Design > Configuration > Search Engine Robots, where you set the default meta robots value and custom robots.txt rules. The default restrictions exclude paths such as /checkout/ and /customer/.
Remember Google’s warning: robots.txt controls crawling, not indexing. A blocked URL can still appear in search if other pages link to it. To keep a page out of the index, use a noindex meta tag or header and let Google crawl it.
Common checks for seo in magento:
- Staging and development sites set to NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW and password protected.
- Internal search results pages (
/catalogsearch/) excluded. - No accidental blocking of CSS, JavaScript or media files Google needs to render pages.
5. Clean up XML sitemaps
Generate sitemaps under Marketing > SEO & Search > Site Map and configure them under Stores > Settings > Configuration > Catalog > XML Sitemap. Adobe’s options include image inclusion (None, Base Only or All), cron-based generation, a batch mode recommended for large catalogs, and automatic submission of the sitemap location to robots.txt.
- Google limits each sitemap to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Magento’s default file limits fit within that.
- Include only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200.
- Google ignores
priorityandchangefreq. It useslastmodonly when it is consistently accurate. - Create one sitemap per store view and submit each in Search Console.
6. Add hreflang for multi-store setups
If you run store views for different languages or countries, hreflang tells Google which version to show. Magento does not output hreflang by default, so you need an extension or custom code.
Google’s rules:
- Every version must list itself and all alternates. If two pages do not point to each other, Google ignores the tags.
- Use ISO 639-1 language codes and optional ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 region codes, such as
en-GB. A country code alone is invalid. - Add
x-defaultfor a fallback or country selector page. - Pick one method (HTML tags, HTTP headers or sitemap). Using several adds no benefit.
7. Implement product structured data
Google supports two related product features: product snippets for pages where users cannot buy directly, and merchant listings for pages where they can. Transactional Magento product pages should target merchant listings, with name, image, price, currency, availability and, where relevant, shipping and return policy details.
Validate with the Rich Results Test, and make sure structured data prices match the visible price, including for configurable products. Google also recommends pairing on-page structured data with a Merchant Center feed for maximum eligibility.
8. Manage URL rewrites and redirects
With “Create Permanent Redirect for URLs if URL Key Changed” enabled, Magento creates 301 redirects automatically when a product or category URL key changes. Even so, audit regularly:
- Look for redirect chains after repeated URL changes and point old URLs straight to the final destination.
- Redirect discontinued products to the closest relevant category or replacement, not the homepage.
- Watch the size of the
url_rewritetable on large catalogs. Excessive category/product rewrites slow down saves and reindexing.
9. Fix Core Web Vitals
Google’s Core Web Vitals targets, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, are: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less.
Magento’s default Luma frontend loads heavy JavaScript, which often hurts INP and LCP on mobile. The most common fixes are full-page caching with Varnish, image optimization, removing unused extensions and scripts, and moving to a lighter frontend such as Hyvä. Our Magento speed optimization service focuses on exactly these metrics.
10. Magento SEO content that ranks
Technical fixes remove barriers. Content earns rankings. For effective magento seo optimization:
- Write unique category introductions that help buyers choose, not keyword blocks at the bottom of the page.
- Replace manufacturer descriptions with original product copy, specs and FAQs.
- Write titles and meta descriptions per page or with smart templates. Magento’s default title is just the product name.
- Link from blog guides to relevant categories and products.
- Give every product image descriptive alt text.
Frequently asked questions
Is Magento good for SEO?
Yes. Magento offers detailed control over URLs, canonicals, robots, sitemaps and metadata. The risk is misconfiguration, especially layered navigation, which can create huge numbers of duplicate URLs.
Should I use the category path in Magento product URLs?
Most stores are better off without it. A product in several categories otherwise gets several URLs. A single short product URL with a canonical tag is simpler to manage.
How often should I regenerate the Magento sitemap?
Daily via cron suits most stores with changing stock and products. Very large catalogs should use batch generation to limit memory use.
Do I need an SEO extension for Magento 2?
The core covers canonicals, redirects, sitemaps and robots. Extensions help with hreflang, richer structured data, SEO-friendly layered navigation and metadata templates. Install only what you need.
