Magento vs Shopify in 2026: An Honest Comparison

Magento vs Shopify in 2026: real costs, B2B, catalog limits, hosting, apps vs extensions and SEO, with clear guidance on when each platform wins.

In short

In the Magento vs Shopify decision, Shopify wins on speed to launch and low operational overhead. Magento (Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce) wins when you need deep customization, complex B2B, unusual catalog logic or full control over hosting and data. Compare total cost of ownership over three years, not monthly fees.

Few platform debates generate as much noise as Magento vs Shopify. Agencies tend to recommend whatever they build on, and comparison articles often recycle outdated pricing. This guide takes a different approach: we look at what each platform actually costs and does in 2026, using vendor documentation, and we say plainly where each one wins.

We build on Magento, and we also migrate stores from Magento to Shopify and back. Both directions are legitimate. The right answer depends on your catalog, your team and your growth plans.

Magento vs Shopify at a glance

First, a naming note. “Magento” today usually means one of three things: Magento Open Source (free, self-hosted), Adobe Commerce (licensed, on-premises or on Adobe’s PaaS cloud), or Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, Adobe’s newer SaaS offering. Shopify comes in standard plans and Shopify Plus for larger merchants.

Magento vs Shopify: total cost of ownership

Monthly fees are the smallest part of the bill on either platform. The real cost sits in apps or extensions, development, hosting, payment fees and ongoing maintenance.

What Shopify costs

According to Shopify’s pricing page, plans billed yearly start at $19 per month (Basic), $54 (Grow) and $299 (Advanced), with higher rates on monthly billing. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

On top of that you pay for apps. Many Shopify stores run a dozen or more paid apps for reviews, subscriptions, search, bundles and loyalty. Add those subscriptions up before you compare.

What Magento costs

Magento Open Source has no license fee. You pay for hosting, extensions, development and maintenance. Adobe Commerce adds a license that Adobe quotes per merchant. On Magento, the largest recurring costs are usually:

  • Hosting and server management, which scales with traffic and catalog size.
  • Upgrades and security patches. Adobe gives each 2.4.x release three years of standard support. Version 2.4.9 reached general availability on May 12, 2026, with support until May 31, 2029. Staying current is ongoing work.
  • Extensions, usually a one-time purchase plus optional yearly support fees.
  • Development for custom features.

Frontend costs have dropped. The Hyvä Theme, a popular fast frontend for Magento, became free and open source in November 2025, which removed a license line item for many projects.

The honest summary: for a small store with standard needs, Shopify is almost always cheaper to run. For a large or complex store, the comparison is close, and Magento can come out ahead when Shopify would require many paid apps or Plus-level fees.

Flexibility and customization

This is where the shopify vs magento gap is widest.

Magento gives you the full codebase. You can change checkout logic, pricing rules, tax handling, catalog structure and integrations at any layer. The trade-off is that every customization must be maintained through upgrades.

Shopify restricts you to themes, apps, APIs and Shopify’s extension points. That limits what you can build, but it also protects you from breaking the platform. For most direct-to-consumer brands, Shopify’s boundaries are rarely the bottleneck.

B2B: Shopify Plus vs Magento

B2B is often the deciding factor in shopify plus vs magento evaluations.

Adobe Commerce ships a full B2B suite: company accounts with hierarchies, shared catalogs with custom pricing, negotiable quotes, purchase orders with approval rules, requisition lists, quick order by SKU and payment on account with company credit lines. Magento Open Source does not include this module, so Open Source merchants rely on extensions or custom work.

Shopify has added B2B features to its plans. Its pricing page lists up to 3 B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and unlimited catalogs on Plus. For straightforward wholesale this is often enough. For complex buyer organizations, approval chains and negotiated quotes, Adobe Commerce is the more complete native option.

Catalog size and product complexity

Shopify raised its limit to 2,048 variants per product for all merchants in October 2025, up from the historical 100. That removed a long-standing pain point for apparel and configurable products.

Magento handles complex catalogs natively: configurable, bundle, grouped, virtual and downloadable products, custom attributes per attribute set, and multiple websites, stores and store views from one installation. If you run several brands, regions or price lists from one backend, Magento’s multi-store model is a strong fit.

Hosting and operations

Shopify handles hosting, scaling, PCI compliance for its checkout and upgrades. You never think about servers.

With Magento you choose. Self-hosting gives you control but requires real expertise: the 2.4.9 stack lists PHP 8.5, MariaDB or MySQL, OpenSearch 3, Valkey, RabbitMQ and nginx. Managed Magento hosting removes most of that burden. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service goes further, with Adobe handling patches and scaling, though it changes how you customize the store.

Apps vs extensions

Both ecosystems are large. The difference is in how add-ons run.

  • Shopify apps usually run on the app developer’s servers and connect through APIs. They are easy to install and remove, but billed monthly, and each one may load scripts on your storefront.
  • Magento extensions install into your codebase. They can change anything, are often bought once, and run on your own servers. Poor-quality extensions are a common cause of upgrade problems and slow pages, so vet them carefully.

SEO: Shopify vs Magento

Both platforms can rank well. The differences are in control.

Magento lets you configure URL suffixes, category paths in product URLs, canonical tags, robots directives, XML sitemaps and URL rewrites per store view. That control helps large international stores, but it also lets you create duplicate content at scale through layered navigation if you configure it badly.

Shopify uses fixed path prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/. You can edit robots.txt through a robots.txt.liquid template, but Shopify warns that it is an unsupported customization and that mistakes can cost you traffic. For most stores Shopify’s SEO defaults are sensible. Stores that need fine-grained control over faceted URLs or hreflang often find Magento easier to tune.

When Shopify wins

  • You want to launch quickly with a small team and no in-house developers.
  • Your catalog and checkout needs are standard.
  • You prefer predictable monthly costs over owning infrastructure.
  • Your current Magento store is expensive to maintain and you do not use its advanced features.

When Magento wins

  • You need complex B2B workflows, custom pricing or quote negotiation.
  • You run multiple brands, regions or currencies from one backend.
  • You need deep integrations with ERP, PIM or warehouse systems that go beyond what apps provide.
  • You want full ownership of code, data and hosting.
  • Your app subscriptions on Shopify would exceed what custom development costs on Magento.

Switching platforms

If you have decided to move, the migration itself is a defined project: products, customers, orders, URLs and redirects, plus SEO protection. Our Magento migration serviceWe also run platform migrations as a separate service; see our Magento migration page. If you are unsure whether to switch at all, an audit of your current store is the cheaper first step.

Frequently asked questions

Is Magento better than Shopify for large stores?

Not automatically. Magento suits large stores with complex catalogs, multi-store setups or B2B needs. Many large direct-to-consumer brands run successfully on Shopify Plus. Size alone does not decide it; complexity does.

Is Adobe Commerce vs Shopify a fair comparison?

Yes, especially Adobe Commerce vs Shopify Plus. Both target mid-market and enterprise merchants. Adobe Commerce offers more native B2B depth and code-level control; Shopify Plus offers lower operational overhead.

Is Magento free?

Magento Open Source has no license fee. You still pay for hosting, extensions, development and maintenance. Adobe Commerce requires a paid license.

Will I lose SEO rankings if I switch platforms?

You can if redirects and metadata are handled poorly. A careful migration maps every old URL to its new equivalent with 301 redirects and preserves titles, descriptions and structured data.
