In short
UnoPim is a free, open source PIM system built on Laravel and released under the MIT licence. It is a practical Akeneo alternative for companies that want to host their own PIM software, keep full access to the code and connect it to Magento 2, Shopify or WooCommerce. Akeneo is still a strong choice if you want a fully managed SaaS product with mature governance features. This guide compares both, honestly.
Why companies look for an Akeneo alternative
Akeneo is one of the best-known names in PIM software. For years, many Magento merchants started with the free Akeneo Community Edition and moved to a paid edition as they grew.
Today Akeneo’s roadmap centres on its paid editions, which are sold as SaaS subscriptions hosted by Akeneo. The Community Edition is still published as open source under the OSL 3.0 licence, Akeneo says it continues to support it, and new releases appeared on GitHub in 2026. The bigger new features, however, go into the paid editions.
Akeneo’s own support page also lists 30 September 2026 as the end of support for version 7.0 of its on-premise and PaaS editions. Teams still on that version have to decide what comes next.
That decision usually comes down to three questions:
- Do we want our product data in a SaaS platform, or on servers we control?
- Is a paid subscription justified for the size of our catalogue and team?
- Can our developers still extend the PIM the way our business needs?
If your answers point towards self-hosting and open code, an open source PIM like UnoPim is worth a close look.
What is UnoPim? An open source PIM built on Laravel
UnoPim is an open source PIM built by Webkul, a software company known for its Magento and Shopify extensions. The source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence, so you can use, change and host it without licence fees. The project has more than 11,000 stars on GitHub, and version 3.1.3 was released in September 2026.
Technically, UnoPim is a Laravel application. The current version needs PHP 8.4 or newer and runs on MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL. Elasticsearch can be added for search; without it, UnoPim searches the database directly.
Its main features:
- Central product data: attributes, attribute families, categories and channels in one place
- Multi-channel, multi-currency and multi-language product data, with support for 33 languages
- Import and export with CSV, XLSX and ZIP files, with progress tracking
- Product completeness scores, version history and webhooks
- Support for the Digital Product Passport
- An optional DAM extension for images and other digital assets
AI features in UnoPim
AI is part of UnoPim itself, not a separate service. Under the name Magic AI, it can:
- Generate product descriptions and other content from your product data
- Create images from text prompts
- Run bulk actions from plain-language instructions through an AI agent chat
- Work with several AI providers, including OpenAI, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek
AI output still needs a human check before it goes live, especially for technical data, sizes and legal claims.
Connecting UnoPim to Magento 2, Shopify and other platforms
PIM software is only useful if the data reaches your store. UnoPim has connectors for the most common e-commerce platforms:
- Magento 2: a connector from Webkul exports categories, attributes, attribute sets, simple and configurable products, images and videos, and can serve several Magento stores
- Shopify: an official connector is listed in the UnoPim project, with a Pro version for more options
- WooCommerce and Shopware 6: connectors from Webkul
- Other systems: an API and webhooks for ERP, marketplace or in-house integrations
Not every connector is free. The core PIM is open source, while some connectors are paid extensions. Check this early when you plan the project.

Akeneo vs UnoPim: a quick comparison
| Akeneo | UnoPim | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Community Edition: OSL 3.0. Paid editions: commercial subscription | MIT |
| Hosting | Community Edition: self-hosted. Paid editions: SaaS hosted by Akeneo | Self-hosted on your server, in Docker or in the cloud |
| Technology | PHP, Symfony | PHP, Laravel |
| Developed by | Akeneo | Webkul |
| Workflows, asset manager, rules | In the paid editions, not in the Community Edition | Roles and permissions included, DAM as an extension |
| Ecosystem | Large partner network, on the market since 2013 | Younger project with a growing set of connectors |
| Best for | Teams that want a managed SaaS PIM with strong governance | Teams that want an open source PIM they host and extend themselves |
When Akeneo is the better choice
UnoPim is not the right answer for everyone. Akeneo is often the better fit when:
- You want a fully managed SaaS PIM and do not want to run servers, backups or updates yourself
- You need mature approval workflows and detailed permissions for large teams in several countries
- You depend on an Akeneo connector or app that has no UnoPim equivalent
- Your organisation prefers a long-established vendor with its own support contracts
When UnoPim is the better choice
- You want an open source PIM with no licence fees and full access to the code
- Your product data must stay on your own servers or in a specific country
- Your developers already work with PHP and Laravel and want to extend the PIM themselves
- You run Magento 2, Shopify or WooCommerce and want AI help with product content
- You use Akeneo Community Edition or an older on-premise version and want a current self-hosted platform
Another open source PIM option: Pimcore
Pimcore deserves a fair look too. It is a broader platform built on PHP and Symfony that combines PIM with master data management, digital asset management and a CMS.
Its Community Edition uses the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL). It is free for non-production use, for academic and non-profit organisations and for companies with annual revenue under 5 million euros or dollars. Larger companies need a commercial licence.
Pimcore suits companies that need one data platform for several departments, not only for product data. If you mainly want a clear PIM for your online store, UnoPim is the more focused option.
Moving from Akeneo to UnoPim
Both systems use similar building blocks: attributes, families, categories and channels. That makes a migration a structured project, not a rebuild from zero. A typical plan looks like this:
- Audit the Akeneo setup: attributes, families, categories, channels, languages and integrations
- Rebuild the data model in UnoPim and remove attributes nobody uses
- Move products, images and product relations, then compare counts and samples
- Connect the store and other systems to UnoPim and test the exports on staging
- Switch over on a planned date, with Akeneo kept read-only as a fallback
Plan enough time for data clean-up. It is often the part of a PIM project that takes the longest.
How MageBooster helps
MageBooster is an official UnoPim partner. We set up UnoPim on your server, in Docker or in the cloud, design the data model around your products and connect it to Magento 2, Mage-OS, Hyvä, Shopify, WooCommerce, ERPs and marketplaces.
For Akeneo migrations we follow a five-week plan, from the audit of your Akeneo structure to a planned switch with Akeneo as a read-only fallback. Small catalogues take about 10 days, large ones with ERP links up to two months. You can book a demo to see UnoPim before you decide.
