In short
Magento 2 is a powerful platform, but it is not one you set up once and forget. Security patches arrive every month, versions reach end of support, extensions and servers need updates, and small problems turn into lost orders when nobody is watching. A Magento agency brings a team, a process and a test environment to that work, so your store stays safe, fast and up to date while you run the business.
Magento 2 needs ongoing care
Most store owners notice the work behind Magento only when something breaks. In practice, a healthy Magento 2 store needs regular attention on several fronts at the same time.
- Security: Adobe publishes security updates for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce on a regular schedule, and critical fixes in between. In September 2026 a vulnerability was actively exploited, and in October a fix rated 10 out of 10 was released only as patch files that a normal update does not install.
- Versions: every 2.4.x release has an end-of-support date. After that, there are no more security fixes for it, and payment providers and extensions slowly stop supporting it.
- Server stack: PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, OpenSearch, Redis and Varnish all have their own versions and their own end-of-life dates, and Magento only supports certain combinations.
- Extensions: a typical store runs dozens of third-party modules. Each update can conflict with another module, with the theme or with a new Magento version.
- Background jobs: cron, indexers, queues and caches keep prices, stock, search and emails up to date. When one of them stops, the store keeps working but slowly shows wrong data.
What goes wrong without a team
These are the situations we see most often when a store comes to us after a period without regular support.
- A security patch was skipped, and months later the store has to catch up on several patches at once, under time pressure.
- An upgrade was started directly on the live store, an extension broke the checkout, and there was no tested way back.
- Cron stopped weeks ago. Order emails, stock updates and sitemaps quietly stopped with it.
- Pages became slower step by step, through new modules, larger images and a growing database, until mobile visitors started leaving.
- The only developer who knew the store left, and nobody else has the access details, the code or the notes.
In-house developer, freelancer or agency?
All three can work. The question is which one fits the size of your store and how much risk you can accept.
| In-house developer | Freelancer | Magento agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skills | One person, usually strong in one area | One person, one area | Backend, frontend and Hyvä, server, SEO and performance in one team |
| Availability | Working hours, holidays and sick days | Depends on the other projects | A team covers holidays, with agreed response times |
| Process | Depends on the person | Depends on the person | Staging, code review, version control, tested backups |
| Knowledge | Leaves with the person | Leaves with the person | Documented and shared in the team |
| Best for | Large stores with a steady stream of work | Small, clearly defined tasks | Stores that need reliable, ongoing care and growth |
Many larger companies combine them: an in-house product owner or developer who knows the business, and an agency for upgrades, security, servers and peaks in the workload.
What a good Magento agency does every month
- Applies security patches on a staging copy first, checks them with Adobe’s version tool and only then takes them live
- Updates extensions and the server stack in a planned order, not all at once
- Watches uptime, cron, indexers, queues, disk space and error logs, and reacts before customers notice
- Takes backups and tests that they can actually be restored
- Measures speed and Core Web Vitals and fixes what slows the store down
- Plans the next upgrade, for example from 2.4.8 to 2.4.9 or a move to Hyvä, with a timeline and a budget
- Reports in plain language what was done and what is coming next
Questions to ask before you choose an agency
- Do you work on a staging environment, and how do you take changes live?
- How do you apply security patches, and how do you check that they work?
- Is the code in a Git repository that belongs to us, and do we keep all access details?
- What response time do you agree for urgent problems, and who answers outside working hours?
- Which Magento 2 and Hyvä stores have you upgraded or built, and can we talk to one of them?
- How do you report your work, and how is the time you spend tracked?
A good agency answers these clearly and in writing. If the answers are vague, keep looking.
Signs it is time to get help
- You do not know which Magento version and patch level your store runs
- The last upgrade was more than a year ago
- Pages take more than three seconds to load on mobile
- You postpone updates because something broke the last time
- One person holds all the knowledge about your store
