Hyvä now runs natively on Magento 2.4.9 and on Mage-OS. We have tested both. What this means for your store →
In short
For most Magento 2 stores in 2026, Hyvä is the most practical way to a fast frontend, because it keeps Magento’s own rendering, caching and extension ecosystem. A headless frontend makes sense when you need several frontends or already have a strong JavaScript team. PWA Studio is now a hard choice for new projects.
When Luma starts to feel slow and dated, store owners usually hear about three options. Move to Hyvä. Move to PWA Studio. Or go headless with a separate JavaScript frontend.

All three can produce a fast shop. They differ in how much of Magento you keep, how much you rebuild, and who can maintain the result. This post compares them from the point of view of a store owner, not a framework fan.
The three options in one paragraph each
Hyvä is a Magento theme. Magento still renders the pages on the server, using layout XML, blocks and templates. Hyvä replaces Luma’s RequireJS, KnockoutJS, jQuery and LESS with Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js. Full-page cache, Page Builder content and most backend logic keep working as before.
PWA Studio is Adobe’s React-based toolkit for building a progressive web app on top of Magento’s GraphQL API. Its reference storefront is called Venia. The frontend runs as a separate application and talks to Magento only through the API.
Headless is the general approach behind PWA Studio, but with any framework. Typical choices are a custom Next.js or Nuxt build, or a commercial frontend platform such as Alokai, formerly known as Vue Storefront. Magento becomes the commerce backend, and the frontend is a separate project with its own hosting.
Comparison at a glance
| Hyvä | PWA Studio | Headless | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rendering | Magento, server-side | React app via GraphQL | Separate app via API |
| Extensions | Compatibility modules for many | Each needs GraphQL and React work | Each needs API and frontend work |
| Page Builder content | Works | Partial support | Needs its own renderer |
| Hosting | One Magento stack | Magento plus a Node layer | Magento plus a frontend platform |
| Team skills | PHP, Magento, Tailwind | React, GraphQL, Magento | JavaScript framework, API, Magento |
Speed: all three can be fast
Speed is not the deciding factor anymore. A well-built headless frontend can be very fast. So can Hyvä.
In our own benchmark, a clean Hyvä store loaded around 26 KB of JavaScript and 15–19 requests per page, against 463–524 KB and 251–275 requests on Luma. Mobile LCP was 1.5–1.6 seconds on Hyvä. The details are in our Hyvä vs Luma benchmark.
JavaScript-heavy frontends have to work harder to reach that level on low-end phones. Server-side rendering, code splitting and careful hydration are needed. It is possible, but it is engineering work that never fully ends.
Extensions: the hidden cost of going headless
This is where the options really differ. A typical Magento store runs many third-party modules: payment providers, reviews, search, promotions, B2B features, tracking.
With Hyvä, many popular extensions already have compatibility modules. Others need their templates rewritten for Alpine.js and Tailwind, which is a contained job. We explain the options in extensions without a Hyvä compatibility module.
With PWA Studio or headless, every extension that shows something to the customer needs two things. It needs a GraphQL or API endpoint, and it needs a new frontend component. Many extensions do not provide either. Each new extension you add later brings the same work again.
Payment methods deserve a special mention. Checkout integrations are the hardest part to rebuild, and they must be tested again for every market.
SEO, content and marketing teams
Search engines handle JavaScript better than they used to, but server-rendered HTML is still the safest choice. Hyvä delivers complete HTML from Magento, with the same URLs, canonicals and structured data you control today. See Hyvä SEO: clean markup and structured data.
Headless frontends can render on the server too, but metadata, redirects and structured data must be rebuilt and kept in sync with Magento.
Content is the other side. Marketing teams that use Magento’s Page Builder keep working in the same way with Hyvä. In a headless setup, content often moves to a separate CMS, which adds another system to learn and pay for.
Where PWA Studio stands in 2026
PWA Studio was Adobe’s main frontend answer for several years. Today its community is small, and Adobe’s newer storefront work for Adobe Commerce is built around Edge Delivery Services and drop-in components instead.
That does not mean existing PWA Studio stores stop working. It does mean a new project should think carefully before choosing a toolkit with an uncertain future and a small pool of developers.
When headless is the right choice
We are not against headless. It is the better choice in some situations:
- You need several frontends, such as a web shop, an app and in-store screens, on one backend.
- Your content lives mainly in a separate CMS, and Magento is only one data source.
- You have an in-house JavaScript team that will own the frontend for years.
- Your store uses few customer-facing extensions, or you plan to replace them with custom code anyway.
If none of these apply, headless usually means paying for flexibility you will not use.
Our recommendation
For most Magento 2 stores we work with, Hyvä is the best balance of speed, cost of change and maintainability. It keeps Magento’s strengths, removes the slow parts of Luma, and can be run by a normal Magento team.
The right answer still depends on your store. That is why every project starts with an audit of extensions, content and markets, before any frontend is chosen.
FAQ
Can we move from PWA Studio to Hyvä?
Yes. The Magento backend, catalogue and customers stay the same. The storefront is rebuilt as a Hyvä theme, and extensions are checked one by one, as in any migration.
Is Hyvä a progressive web app?
No. Hyvä is a server-rendered Magento theme. It focuses on fast pages and a light frontend rather than app-like offline features.
Could we start with Hyvä and go headless later?
Yes. Magento’s GraphQL API stays available whatever theme you use. Starting with Hyvä does not block a headless frontend later, for example for a mobile app.
